Goat-y Adventures in Normandy

Goat evening everyone!

Some may say that I’m a bit animal-mad.  ‘Tis true, especially when considering my crafty love of yarn, so what better than a little trip to a Goat Farm on my recent holiday in Normandy?

La Grange au Mohair is based near Bernesq, a few miles west of Bayeux.  Mum and I decided to visit these lovely creatures and were not disappointed!

Above are some of the friends we made, Cheeky Nose and Baby Face McGinty.  They look cute, but really they are megalomaniacs-in-waiting, planning world domination…  Don’t trust them!

Mme Glaise, who runs the farm, was very welcoming and offered a fascinating tour in perfect English (we started off in French but had to relent in the end!)  They keep the goats very well and they are happy to live out their retirements there in peace.

Above is Baa Baa White Goat, a rather talkative personality, as you can see.  She’s a bit of a gossip so make sure you don’t share anything too important with her, otherwise it will be all over the farm by sundown…

Unlike the cheap mohair, scratchy jumpers we all wore in the 80s (oh go on, admit it!) this beautiful yarn is sorted and carded by Mme, and as she explains, the ‘grey’ hair within the mix is the itchy part which is discarded.  The yarn is then sent to the south of France and mixed with silk, spun and dyed.  As well as selling the yarn, Mme makes clothes out of it, unfortunately I didn’t get a picture of these, too busy with my goaty pals!

So, more Normandy adventures to follow over the weekend, and the Etsy shop plans are back on track now I’m feeling a bit brighter!

To finish, here are a few more of the characters I met over this lovely trip!  They’ve definitely had their Goatibix.

Compare and contrast, above left are the demure, reticent female and young goaties, above right and below are the boys.  Leering over the barriers and sticking their goaty noses out for attention.  Quelle surprise!

Happy goating!

Holiday Crafting Plans

So, we’re having a lovely time in Bayeux, and will be very sorry to be leaving!

I have plenty of photos and information to post on my return, but as promised I thought I’d send through the projects I took with me…  Mum is a first-rate quilter, sewer and has now taken up knitting as well (I’m sure it has nothing to do with me though!)

She made me this fabulous project bag which I use lots and lots – and have packed to capacity with bits and bobs from my stash that I thought I would like to use up…

Firstly some lovely Rowan Pure Wool Aran that I have been saving up – I have had many ideas of what I would like to use this for – a hat or scarf, I’m not sure I’ve made my mind up yet!

Next some Crofter DK – I wanted to try this out so only bought a skein of each…  My plan when going on holiday was to make some prototypes, let’s see what I have done with them when I get back home…

This Artesano Alpaca yarn I bought in Marbella, I have four skeins so that is plenty to make something yummy with – I so love to work with Alpaca, but this is much finer than I am used to!

Another Marbella purchase, some Filosofia Palma in the most beautiful colour schemes – perhaps some crochet jewellery or a set of rather stylish coasters…  What will these become?

Finally some Sirdar Americana – I made a lovely shawl with this cotton, but they only had one skein left in this colourway so I bought it on impulse.  What will the plans for this be?

What fabulous creations can you make with one skein?

Happy crafting!

Poppies and Lace – an Odyssey!

Just in time for this week’s hotly anticipated (ha!) heatwave – I have some time off and am going on a little jaunt with my family.

It’s the first time that Mum, Dad, my brother Alex and I have holidayed together in at least 25 years (and no, I’m not revealing my age!)

I’ll give you a few clues as to where we may be going…  Firstly from Mum’s garden…

Secondly, I expect to be drinking this (in moderation, mesdames et monsieurs!)

And thirdly, we shall be staying within a stone’s throw of this beautiful piece of work…

Apart from the lovely markets and the Bayeux Tapestry itself, our trip is as a homage to my uncle, Bill Vernon, who fought in Normandy and helped liberate many of the villages around where we are staying.

I hope to be posting some poignant and interesting photos with help from my brother, who should have been a military historian, such is the breadth and depth of his knowledge of, in particular, the two World Wars (although he seems to know a great deal about most historical conflicts).

Needless to say I will be taking a few projects with me…  More on that later!
